In 1923, Chicago Defender Founder Robert S. Abbott and his editor Lucius Harper served Bud Billiken Club. Abbott has long been a problem for young African-American Chicago and success of the Defender "Youth Page" expressed conviction that a club is also very popular. Harper apparently chose the name "Bud" because he is his own nickname, and "Billiken" because of its cooperation with the former by a mythical Chinese character believes to be an angel guardian of children. In 1929, Bud Billiken Club membership card and identification with its buttons, was so popular with black youth from Chicago that Abbott decided to celebrate an annual parade to start.
