Shower Water
Why does my shower water turn cold when any other water in the house gets turned on?
It started happening a few months ago, if you use any other water in the house while in the shower, the shower water instantly gets cold. Then, when the other water is shut off, the temp goes back to normal. I lived in this house for 2.5 years and this just started a few months ago. What could be the problem?
Very good chance your water heater is to blame.
Seems system recovery is not what it once was.
This means your water heater needs maintenance.
Maintenance? Yes maintenance. When you apply
a heat source to water you begin a chemical process.
This process heats and removes minerals from
the water. The more minerals in your water supply
the more involved the process becomes. The end
result is a calcium salt substance that collects
in the bottom of your water heater. If allowed to
reach the lower heating element it will cover and
insulate the element causing it to overheat and
fail due to not having water near the element
to sink the heat and exchange the high temperature
that it creates while attempting to heat the water.
Maintenance for your water heater is a preventative
process. Turn off the power to the water heater.
Attach a garden hose to the drain valve on the
bottom and drain the water heater. Once all the water
is out.detach the wires from the lower coil and
carefully turn the element in a counter clockwise
fashion until it can be removed from the water heater.
Now this is a telltale of element failure if the element
is hard to remove from the installation point or if it
is mis-shapen or bent outward. You can obtain
a water heater scoop from the hardware store. This
is used for busting up the calcium deposits and facilitating
the removal process. I did this and installed a 3/4 inch
copper pipe with a 90 degree bend sweated on about 8
inches from one end and then extend the pipe about another
10 inches from the other side if available sweat a 1
inch copper adapter to one end attach this adapter to a
wet vac hose using duct tape to seal it into the end of the wetvac
hose. Now use the pipe to break up the sediment in the
bottom of the tank and vacuum out the broken up pieces.
Clean the water heater out until nothing else will come out.
use a small inspection mirror to inspect your work. If you
have small particulate matter left in the bottom flush
the tank out with a garden hose on low pressure.Once
finished reinstall the water heater element. Make sure the
black rubber washer is on the element to seal the threads
from leaking. Close the drain valve. refill the heater until
water begins to come out of the relief valve when you hold
it in the open position. Now turn on the power. Wait 2 hours
to use the hot water. Why? This will allow the water heater
to rebound and keep the water at a preset temperature.
