How much pressure does it take to pop popcorn?
I just did a lab in chemistry today and it was really confusing for the entire class since the teacher wouldnt help us, so how much pressure does it really take to pop popcorn (in units of atm).
I don’t have an actual number, but because the kernel is pretty small and it has a hard, tough, plastic-like skin, I bet the pressure INSIDE the kernel just before popping would be quite high! Maybe several hundred psi. Maybe you could see what kind of applied pressure (around the kernels) in a sealed cooking vessel would prevent the popping from ocurring.

When making popcorn, the kernels are in cooking oil that is about 400F (maybe more) long enough for the trapped water in the kernels to be at the same temperature as the oil so, looking in the steam tables for the pressure of steam at 400F, it’s about 250 psi! This is probably only an approximate value.
