What can the mystery be?
The fundamental point of a mystery party game is that the party goers must decipher something.
Assimilating things
‘How much preparation are you happy to undertake’ is the first question you will need to answer. The sorts of mystery party games available to you will be determined by your response to this question.
By deciding on ‘a lot of’ advance preparation, you’ll be able to create a full-on party themed with the mystery. You’ll be able to create a fairly good mystery party along with some great mystery party games by undertaking some advance preparation. Selecting ‘no’ preparation, will mean you should focus on utilizing mystery party games rather than the actual mystery itself.
What theme can i incorporate?
Mystery party games are usually more successful if they accompany a theme. Traditional mystery party games involve the ‘the butler dunit’ type themes. However this need not be the case.
Walk around your child’s bedroom to determine what she finds enjoyable and centre it on that. Each of these can become a theme for a party, and each theme can have accompanying mysteries.
For example, a a film theme can have a ‘who should be my co-star’ mystery. Get your daughter to make suggestions too – use their imaginations!
If you decide that you’d prefer to not have a theme, there are lots of mystery party games that you can include. Examples of a couple include I Spy and Charades.
How long?
If you’re happy to do lots of organizing, the mystery could last throughout the duration of the party. Some hair and make-up games before the main party starts are a great idea, as would be asking everyone to come in fancy-dress.
You could bake some treats for the party too. It’s really up to you to decide.
If you’d prefer to not do any planning, it’s probably better to focus on games other than those solely associated with mysteries.
Nevertheless, they’re a brilliant idea to have at any party, as kids thrive on variety.
The questions you’ll need to ask yourself are when the appropriate time for such games is and how long they should last for.
What mysteries?
What types of mysteries can be incorporated? Remembering the times you have spent with your daughter’s friends will point you in the right direction.
You could also consider asking your daughter’s friends’ parents to see whether they have any ideas. Girls tend to have a preference for mystery parties that are less scary, but involve a puzzle to solve. However, my daughters have attended some mystery parties that have been quite gruesome and they had a fun time. It depends on the party goers’ age.
A ‘murder mystery’ party may be enjoyed with some party-goers, but others will prefer a more tame party. To assist you, you could have a word with your child to see what she would like.
Girls: how many?
This is important if you are doing a lot of organizing before the party. It’s better to know, for example, how many characters you need to create, the number of scenarios you have to think up, etc. You can wing it if you’re not fussed about preparation.
What are my required actions?
What mystery you decide on will help to determine this.
If you’re planning a complete mystery party, there are many party packs available to purchase online which give you everything you will need. If you don’t have lots of time, these are perfect.
However, it is also enjoyable (and more special) to make your own mystery. To do this, you must decide what the mystery is (e.g. the real queen). Next, decide what characters to include. Each character should have one fact that the rest of the characters do not know. It could be that this is connected to the mystery or just something else for the girls to discover. If you are keen to make the party special, you could include scenarios for the party-goers to act in. Determining the mysteries is the game’s focus.
If you include your daughter in the planning, perhaps you should think about trying to hide the mysteries from her.
