Planning Hawaiian luau for 16 yr old?
So I’m planning my daughters sweet 16, and the theme is hawaiian luau. there are going to be around 25 people, all in our backyard with pool. the party is four hours…my daughter is worried that the guests will get bored in four hours and will have nothing to do. we have a pineapple bowling set, hula hoops, and limbo as our activities, and the guests can use the pool…will the guests get bored? should we have specific times for the activities (like a hula hoop competition at x time) so that the guests actually do the activities? my daughter was scared that these are 16 yr olds and don’t like being told what to do. what would the guests do for four hours? we were thinking about an hour for food, so i guess three hours….
help! i really want my daughter to have fun, but i know she won’t have fun if her friends don’t have fun
This sounds like a lovely idea for your daughter. I don’t think you need to worry too much, 4 hours will go quickly when she is among her friends and the centre of attention. It’s good that you have the games organised but don’t be surprised if you end up not doing them because they are having a good time without them. The limbo and hula hoop contest will be great fun though. Just play it by ear, dont stress, if it falls a bit flat introduce a game and if you feel more comfortable write up a time table but never mind if you dont stick to it. Just make sure there is plenty of good music. If you need inspiration for the theme and decos and stuff check out Grease 2 as they have a Luau as their prom. I just remembered my sisters 16th (12 years ago) we tied donuts to strings and then to the clothes line and then ate them with our hands tied behind our backs, difficult and embarrasing but fun when among friends, you could try this with pineapple rings or something. Maybe get some coconut scented candles to create ambiance. Serve punch made with soda, pineapple juice and coconut milk (in bottles to avoid spiking) pour into a glass and add as much hawaiian paraphenalia as you can such as little umbrellas and toothpicks skewered with pineapple and tropical fruit, give everyone a lai as they arrive (just cheap ones) and perhaps when you do the cake get your daughter to make a speech and crown her with a reef of tropical flowers ‘the hawaiian princess’.
