Hawaiian Lei

Why are some college graduates seen wearing hawaiian lei?
I was wondering why some college graduates are seen wearing Hawaiian lei at their commencement ceremony?
Is because of particular graduating honors or associations?
Or do all graduates get a lei upon graduating?
Thanks.
In true Hawaii custom, it is common to give a lei to someone of distinction. In this case, a graduation ceremony is quite a distinction, needless to say. Therefore the people you see recieving a lei at graduation outside of Hawaii likely have some sort of ties to Hawaii — personal, family, or friends.
Overall, you need to avoid the stereotype of lei’s that tourists wear, it’s not the same meaning at all. In true lei fashion, one never buys their own lei to wear on themselves as that is contrary to the whole meaning.
