How old was your baby when you stopped breastfeeding?
Just wondering how old your baby/babies were when you stopped breastfeeding them and why?

I wanted to make it to a year, at least. I really wanted to make it to two years since that’s what the World Health Organization recommends, but I didn’t want to give myself such a lofty goal that I may not be able to meet. So one year was my goal and I was determined to get to there, no matter what.
I was in tears every time I nursed because my nipples hurt so much even though my baby’s latch was perfect. But I wouldn’t give up. I would have walked through fire to make it to a year.
After several MONTHS, it stopped hurting, and getting to a year after that was nothing. The beginning was really hard, and I wanted to quit every day, but I was determined to make sure my baby got breastmilk (no formula at all) for at least a year.
When my baby was a year old, my sister was nursing two year old twins. When I saw that, it just looked strange because I had never seen it before and thought it would feel strange too when my baby got to that age, but it wasn’t. It felt normal by then.
Since it was smooth sailing after the first several months and I just kept going. I can’t even imagine trying to wean a baby or a 1 year old. They won’t have any idea why you are denying them.
I figured I’d let my daughter self-wean, but at two years old, she wasn’t even slowing down so I slowly started weaning at two. She was fully weaned at about 2 years and 2 months. It was easy to wean…no tears because she was old enough to understand.
I nursed my second child for the same amount of time. I thought a little over two years was perfect. I met the highest goal set by health experts, but it wasn’t so old that I got any funny looks or felt strange doing it.
I figure it’s too early to wean if you’ll have to switch to a breastmilk-replacement (formula). It’s not normal. Before the invention of it, mothers HAD to breastfeed for the first year. If you have to put the baby on formula, then it’s too early to wean.
